The TVI Take
Park Chan-wook's 2002 first installment of the Vengeance Trilogy anchored by Song Kang-ho as a businessman whose daughter dies after being kidnapped, and his retaliation against the deaf-mute factory worker who was himself trying to ransom money for his sister's kidney transplant. The structural commitment to letting both protagonists be sympathetic and both be moral failures is the formal experiment that established Park as a major-canonical director.
