The TVI Take
The Coens' second feature, Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter as childless white-trash newlyweds who steal a baby from a furniture magnate's quintuplets, committed to a register most American comedies refuse: visual exuberance (the chase sequence is one of the most dynamically-shot in 1980s film) wedded to genuine pathos about reproduction and inadequacy. Tonally distinct from anything else the Coens have made.
