The TVI Take
The Coens' Prohibition-era gangster film whose visual register (the hat in the wind, the Tom-and-Verna lighting) operates as sustained homage to Dashiell Hammett's Glass Key and Red Harvest at simultaneously parodic and reverent registers. Gabriel Byrne's Tom Reagan is structural rather than dramatic, a character whose loyalty calculus is the actual subject of the film.
