The TVI Take
PTA's 1996 debut feature (originally titled Sydney) anchored by Philip Baker Hall as an aging gambler who takes John C. Reilly's down-on-his-luck protagonist under his wing in Reno.
The genuine structural achievement is the slow-reveal of why, a character whose moral debt to the protagonist's father is the engine of the entire screenplay. Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson anchor supporting work; PTA's late-style is already visible in the formal commitment.
