The TVI Take
BritBox adapts Janice Hadlow's 2020 novel reimagining Mary Bennet, the priggish middle daughter of Pride & Prejudice, as the protagonist of her own coming-of-age. Ella Bruccoleri is genuinely revelatory as Mary, an introvert who's spent her life confusing performed virtue for actual character.
The 10-episode structure speed-runs the events of Pride & Prejudice in two episodes to free its later eight for original material set in London, Austen purists will object, and the show is better for not deferring.
