The TVI Take
Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 masterwork for Studio Ghibli. A ten-year-old girl, Chihiro, stumbles into a spirit world where her name is taken from her and her parents are turned into pigs.
The developmental work the film stages, with clinical precision, is a child remembering who she is when the adults around her have failed to protect her. The only animated film to win both the Best Animated Feature Oscar and the Berlin Golden Bear. Joe Hisaishi's score and the train-over-water sequence remain reference points the medium has not surpassed.
