The TVI Take
Sean Penn's 2007 adaptation of Jon Krakauer's nonfiction account of Christopher McCandless, who walked into the Alaskan bush in 1992 and starved. Emile Hirsch carries the film through chapter-card structure named after McCandless's journals.
Eddie Vedder's score and Hal Holbrook's late-act monologue do as much narrative work as the screenplay.
