The TVI Take
Scorsese's 2011 family-adventure that is in fact sustained inquiry into early cinema history, Georges Méliès's career, A Trip to the Moon's restoration, the fragility of film preservation. The Brian Selznick novel adaptation gave Scorsese the cover to make the cinema-archive love letter he had been making in essays and documentaries for decades.
Ben Kingsley's Méliès is the film's actual subject; the boy protagonist is the framing device.
