The TVI Take
Spielberg's 2001 Stanley Kubrick-conceived adaptation of Brian Aldiss's short story 'Supertoys Last All Summer Long', the film Kubrick spent decades developing before his death, completed by Spielberg from Kubrick's preparation. The Spielberg-vs-Kubrick aesthetic tension is the film's actual subject (warm-emotional-pull warring with cold-philosophical-rigor); the final-act 2000-years-later sequence is more ambitious than the studio system typically allows.
Underrated on release; reads better now.
