Best Musical Films, Ranked by IQ Score
Film musicals that treat their musical numbers as actual structural argument. Ranked by IQ Score.
Film musicals divide into two registers: works whose musical numbers ARE the dramatic engine, and works that use songs as setting decoration. The TVI rubric reads the structural difference. The medium's canonical musicals are the ones where the choreography, the lyrics, and the song placement carry dramatic material the dialogue cannot.
Anchor picks: Cabaret (1972, Fosse) is the canonical political-musical entry. West Side Story (Spielberg 2021 remake) and the 1961 original anchor the Romeo-and-Juliet-musical canon. La La Land (2016, Chazelle) is the contemporary canonical-musical entry. Sweeney Todd (Sondheim/Burton 2007) is the canonical dark-musical adaptation.
